How do I enroll a student?
Enrollment Applications will be made available at all AAPS elementary
and middle schools. Teachers, principals, and counselors will have
information on enrollment. The application must be completely filled out by both school personnel and family. Please click on the “Enroll/Refer a Student” button on the left to get
more information, or call us at 734-995-6816).

How much does it cost?
Student's families must meet our low-income criteria. Our services are free of charge to enrolled students.

Do you accept students from
Ypsilanti and other school districts in Washtenaw County?
Due to limited available space, we can only serve children who live in or go to
school in Ann Arbor or Ypsilanti. However, one of our future goals is to provide
services or serve as a model to similar organizations in other school
districts in Washtenaw County.

Do Institute students get
summers off?
Yes, our program runs September through June.
We understand the importance of having academic exposure year-round,
but realize many students are not able to participate consistently during
the busy summer months. This is why we offer a fun and unique summer program
for those families who are interested in supplementing their child’s education.

Do you have a math program?
Yes, our math program is on Mondays.

Do you provide transportation?
FLI does not provide transportation. The majority of our
students are dropped off and picked up by their families. Some of
our students take the #6 AATA bus, which stops near the Institute.
On occasion, families who live close to each other coordinate carpools.

Are you a program of the
Ann Arbor school district?
No, we are not an Ann Arbor school program, but we are partners with
the Ann Arbor Public Schools. School teachers refer their students
to us, and FLI and schools regularly share information
and resources.

The student's Teacher Consultant shares achievements and other
pertinent information with the parents, Reading Tutor, and schoolteachers
on a regular basis.

When would my child exit the program?
There is no set time limit on the length of time a student may attend
the Institute. We still have some students that have been with us
for over two years-they still need the help and enjoy coming here.
Some students exit because they move away or complete the 8th grade.
Other students exit because they don't have reliable transportation
or consistently fail to meet the expectations outlined in the contract.
Other students exit because they have achieved their goals, are
reading at or above their grade level, and demonstrate that they will
be successful without FLI's help. Because there are a variety of reasons for leaving, exits are evaluated on a case-by-case
basis.

Do I have to have teaching
experience to become a volunteer tutor?
No, teaching experience is not necessary to become a volunteer tutor- just a
love of children and a commitment to making a difference in their
lives. We ask that volunteers make at least a 1 year commitment
to tutor.
Is there a minimum age to
be a volunteer tutor?
Volunteer tutors must be at least a sophomore in college (or if not in
college, at least 20 years old) and need to demonstrate the maturity
and ability to work effectively with children.
If I become a volunteer tutor,
how many hours a week would I need to commit?
The commitment for tutors is typically one hour per week. In addition, we offer
workshops and trainings on a regular basis, which all volunteers
are encouraged to attend.
