"Having this resource in the community is a wonderful thing."

"The combination of approaches makes an incredible difference with the kids."

Overview

If you've ever seen the frustration on a child's face when he stumbles over written words, struggles to make her feelings clear, or can't quite express an idea, you'll understand why we approach communication skills from three different perspectives: reading coaching, peer group discussion, and self-directed writing. Since young people learn in different ways and there is no single approach to teaching reading, the program design is multi-sensory and multi-dimensional.

Our School-Year Program

The academic program is run by Teacher Consultants (TC's). TC's develop
Individual Literacy Plans that are tailored to each student's strengths and needs. They also provide ongoing support, guidance, and resource materials to our coaches.

Students are encouraged to work collaboratively with their Reading Coach to make program decisions and develop learning plans that are appropriate for their needs. Our expectations are high but realistic. Students and parents understand how important it is to put forth extra effort to achieve their personal learning goals.

Each student attends a two-hour session once a week, during the school year. Sessions are held Monday through Thursday. Elementary school students (3rd - 5th grade) attend from 6-8:00 PM, Middle school students
(6th - 8th) attend from 3:30-5:30 PM.

Individual Reading Instruction

It's amazing what a little practice can do for reading skills. In a 60-minute, one-on-one collaborative session with a trained Reading Coach, students learn to focus, develop comprehension skills, and build vocabulary and fluency. Individual reading rooms provide the privacy and confidentiality that students need and desire.

FLI's library includes more than 2500 books organized by subject and available for all reading levels. Students choose their own books to take home to read during the week, or books to read during their reading session. The "Reading Contract" that students sign during the initial interview requires that all students read at home for at least 5 days a week, 30 minutes each day.

    Family Empowerment Program
The Family Empowerment Program has three components:
Family Education; Family Support; and a Family Resource Center

According to research on factors that enhance student achievement, one of the factors that remains constant as being unquestionably vital is parent involvement. Therefore, our Family Empowerment Program is designed to teach parents the skills that will enable them to become an academic support system for their children throughout their primary and secondary academic career.
