Overview
If you've ever seen the frustration on a child's face when he stumbles
over written words, struggles to make her feelings clear, or can't
quite express an idea, you'll understand why we approach communication
skills from three different perspectives: reading tutoring, peer
group discussion, and self-directed writing. Since young people
learn in different ways and there is no single approach to teaching
reading, the program design is multi-sensory and multi-dimensional.
Our School-Year Program
Certified teachers run the academic program, developing Individual Instructional Plans that are tailored to each student's strengths and needs.
They also provide ongoing support, guidance, and resource materials to our tutors.
Students are encouraged to work collaboratively with their Reading Tutor
to make program decisions and develop learning plans that are appropriate for their needs.
Our expectations are high but realistic. Students and parents understand how important
it is to put forth extra effort to achieve their personal learning goals.
Each student attends a two-hour session once a week, during the school year.
Sessions are held Monday through Thursday. Elementary school students (3rd - 5th grade)
attend from 6-8:00 PM, and Middle school students (6th - 8th) attend from 3:30-5:30 PM.

Individual Reading Instruction
It's
amazing what a little practice can do for reading skills. In a 60-minute,
one-on-one collaborative session with a trained Reading Tutor, students
learn to focus, develop comprehension skills, and build vocabulary
and fluency. Individual reading rooms provide the privacy and confidentiality
that students need and desire.
FLI's library includes
more than 2500 books organized by subject and available for all reading levels.
Students choose their own books to take home to read during the week, or books to read
during their reading session. The Home Reading Program requires that all students read at home for
at least 5 days a week, 30 minutes each day.

supported by trained writing tutors.
Students meet in small groups (6-7 students) to work on the following skills:
vocabulary and word choice
higher-level thinking and questioning
speaking and listening
pre-writing techniques
attention to detail
sentence structure
paragraphing
organization

Math Mondays
FLI offers math tutoring for students in grades 4-7. This program meets on Mondays from 4:00 to 5:30pm for 6th and 7th graders, and 6:00 to 7:30pm for 4th and 5th graders.
Basic math fundamentals are taught by certified teacher Ron Betzig in a small group setting. Students then meet with math tutors to practice these skills.
